Vice President Health Safety and Sustainability, Modern Niagara
Erin has been active in Health & Safety for 27 years. With a degree in Kinesiology and a minor in forensics, she has worked very hard to prevent injuries, occupational diseases and fatalities in the workplace. She has a business diploma from Sheridan College and is currently working on her MBA with McGill on a part time basis.
Ms Oliver joined Modern Niagara in 2015. In her current role, Ms. Oliver manages the company’s national health & safety program that ensures all employees work in a secure environment. Her roll also includes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), wellness and sustainability. In 2020, Erin was honoured by Modern Niagara with the One Modern Award for Excellence in living to the company’s core values.
Prior to joining Modern Niagara, Ms. Oliver was a consultant for 21 years.
Ms. Oliver is a member of the the Prevention Council of Ontario with a mandate to make Ontario Safer and is currently the Chairwoman of the Council.
In October 2020, Erin was honoured with the Avetta award for Canada’s Safety Leader of the Year from Key Media and Canadian Occupational Safety Magazine.
Ms. Oliver has won both the Gil Sampson Award and the Roy Phinnemore Award from the IHSA for her service to safety in Ontario’s Construction sector.
She was an active member of the Ontario Labour Management Regulatory Advisory Committee and the Occupational Disease and Research Advisory Committee; helping to influence policies that keep workers across the province safe on the job. She is an active member of the Provincial Labour Management Health & Safety Committee for pipe trades and a contributor to the Ontario General Contracting Association’s safety committee.
A past president of the Ontario Kinesiology Association and currently registered with the Ontario College of Kinesiologists, Ms. Oliver continues to advocate vigorously for safer work environments and healthier employees. In 2011, she was given the “President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement” from the Ontario Kinesiology Association in recognition of her tireless efforts on behalf of workers throughout the Province including leading the team that saw regulation of Kinesiology into Ontario legislation.
Ms. Oliver has been a Canadian Registered Safety Professional since 2000 and has participated in the Application Review Committee and regularly volunteered and contributed to the profession needs of the association including various working groups and feedback committees. In 2020 Ms Oliver was awarded the 2019 Recognition Award from the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals.
The Institute for Work & Health has named Ms. Oliver an Educational Influential in both Kinesiology and Health and Safety, regularly calling on her to participate and contribute to research and systemic reviews. She is also a team member with research at NIOSH and works with CPWR in the US.
In addition to her full-time work at Modern Niagara Group, Ms. Oliver teaches courses in the Masters of Professional Kinesiology at University of Toronto and has taught in Forensic Kinesiology at University of Guelph-Humber.
All that being said, the most important and valuable part of life to Ms. Oliver is her family.
Ms. Oliver is married and has 4 adult children.
