At Brasco, our business was founded upon three guiding principles: ambition, industriousness and a relentless commitment to challenging the status quo. Backed by industry experts and safety advocates, our team is led by professionals who don’t only talk the talk, but walk the walk. When decisions are made around here, we start with you. Whether we’re sourcing a new piece of safety wear or making a pivotal business decision, our first, and last question, is always – how will this serve our customer? That’s why we’re able to provide the high-quality PPE that we do, and why it’s only ever long-lasting, reliable equipment that’s comfortable to wear and looks great.

OHS professionals work in and support a wide range of industries such as construction, energy, mining, utilities and health care. It is important to recognize that gender imbalances exist in the OHS profession and in certain industries more than others. Women in OHS can face unique challenges that our male colleagues may not. For example:

  • Female safety professionals are often working in male-dominated industries and face concerns around personal safety when working in remote locations and/or living in camps.
  • Issues related to diversity, inclusion, harassment, and discrimination in the workplace are unfortunately, a reality that many women will face. Resources and information on how to effectively navigate these challenges are critical.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is usually tailored to men, so finding equipment that fits a woman’s body properly can be a challenge.
  • Women often are not provided the same mentorship and sponsorship opportunities as their male colleagues.

These are just a few of the reasons why a group of like-minded OHS professionals, all women, representing various industry sectors, got together and formed the Women in Occupational Health & Safety Society (WOHSS). We wanted to provide a safe place for women to hold difficult conversations without the fear of being judged. We wanted to be a part of making things better for those women coming up behind us.

Incorporated as a not-for-profit society in 2017, WOHSS is a grass-roots organization dedicated to supporting women working in OHS in Canada. The mission of WOHSS is support women working in OHS through education, mentoring, resources and connection. Building women’s networking groups and recognising gender issues within a profession can increase awareness, promote person growth and drive positive advancement.

With over 350 members across Canada, WOHSS welcomes women (and men) at all stages of their career, from OHS students just starting out to those in senior executive roles. WOHSS hosts several events and networking sessions including: OHS-focused presentations, diversity and inclusion events, volunteering to support women in need, participation in the Steps for Life walk and informal networking events.

Empowered women empower women.
